SB Harbor 7-26-2010

7-26-2010

SB sandbar,
Short version:
I fished the sand bar last night from 5:30 to 6:30 I caught lots of small perch on Dave V’s epoxy fly.

Long version: July
I spent a week on the east coast for a family vacation (not fishing vacation) I did sneak out one day on a friend’s boat chasing Blue fin. He/we hooked up for 15 seconds on Popper. It was pretty amazing to see schools of tuna 4 miles from Barnstable harbor in the middle of Cape Cod bay. I got out a few mornings and caught blue fish.

We got home, and I caught up at work and yard work etc. On Sunday I snuck out at the crack of 11:00 AM to prospect for new fishing spots up the coast. I drove straight up to Gaviota and worked my way back stopping at all the turn outs on hwy 101 that looked promising. It was a perfect day, except for all the loose kelp so I didn’t fish at all. But I found some promising beaches to check out in the future. I did see a few people fishing with cut bait and long spinning rods.
At Haskell’s/Baccara beach I fished for a bout an hour for nothing. On the way back to the truck I ran into a kid, he stopped me and asked about fly fishing. He said on the 4th of July he saw lots of Corbina at the sand spit, he said it was totally frustrating couldn’t get them to bite on anything etc. So basically I spent all of Monday at work thinking about the sandbar and how I was going to catch a Corbina…

I’ll probably go back tonight, or maybe East Beach…

Cheers,
Matt W

Matt,
Thanks for the report from the "far north". Keep us up to date on your progress finding the "better fishin' holes". I love that area up there but haven't fished it much. Be sure to try Bates Road area down by Rincon, the pier at Sandspit in Goleta and up toward Campus Beach and of course Santa Claus Lane.

Matt,

Thanks for the reminder. I started a batch of epoxy flies, but have yet to finish them... hopefully next week. I'll contact you when I have them done.
