Catalina 7/16 - 3 B's

With all the nasty weather we've had this year, I'd only been over to Catalina one time before this year. With some South East wind predicted, I was a little hesitant to go, but after checking the wind in the morning, I elected to give it a try.

The sun rising over Cabrillo.

The run over was a breeze. Seas were calm, the air was warm. The skies were cloudy, and a few drops of rain came down. It all looked good when we arrived at our destination on the front side, East End.

Dave struck first, picking up his first Bonito of the year, made all the more enjoyable as he was fishing a new 6wt rig.

Though we saw bones at pretty much every spot we stopped on, the schools were not thick, and the fish were picky. At best we'd get one or two to play, and the rest would just follow. The old standby, Blue and White Deceivers seemed to work best for us today. We had our best luck letting the fly sink out for a 30 count, and then ripping it back up. Though a couple times we got nabbed right at the boat as we paused just before pulling the fly out of the water.

Dave with his new "Mary Kay Edition" Abel Super 6. (Congrats Dave, on beng #1 in cosmetics sales for your territory! Good call opting for the reel instead of the Cadillac).

I picked up this sub-legal, but still fun 'cuda. We had follows from some much larger cuda, but they were not interested in the fly.

In the afternoon, we moved up the island in search of greener pastures. There we found a few small calicos to complete the 3 B's for the day. I also got a few more bones, including this pretty one.

As is often the case with us, we stuck around just a little too long, and the westerly winds came up - making our crossing back rather wet (at least for me, on the windward side of the boat). I like a good saltwater shower as much as the next guy, but next time, I will slicker-up.

It was great to get back over to Cat, and hope to do it again soon.

Those were tripped out conditions yesterday morning, eh? You defintely made the right move heading across! With not a lot of time to fish, a buddy and I hit the local zone for a handful of sandies in blown out, choppy, wind against current conditions. The mackerel wer of course THICK.

Rob,

Way too funny :) I have to respect the fact that it is an Abel reel and that Dave is a manly man so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that the majority of his sales were men's cologne, after shave, men's hair products, etc. and not all women's products. Looks like you guys pick a good morning to cross the channel.
