huge perch!!

Hi Bryan,

Wow - that's a huge perch!

20" was a quick guesstimate right? Not on a tape measure?
Guessing from the photo, if your reel is 4" in diameter, it looks like that fish might be 15-16" long
but it is hard to tell for sure because of the angles in the picture.

The IGFA world record barred surf perch from Oxnard in March 1996 was
4.2 lbs (another 4.2 lb'er came from Morro Bay in Nov 1995 -
a really good winter for perch I guess!!). All indications on the net
are that these fish were in the 16-17" length range. If your
perch was 20", and loaded with fry, it would have had to have
gone easily over 5 lbs I would think.

(There is a great compilation of big perch info at
http://www.zenflyfishing.com/barredperch.html)

A huge perch like that is a real rarity - congrats! What fly did
you catch her on?

Hey man thanks for the congrats, your right just a guess , but I use my hand
about 9'' it came out two hands plus two inches more or so.she was fat anyway, my largest for shure.was fun landing her.I got her on a dumbbell rootbeer and red surf worm. I never take pics for lack of a camera, thou I had my phone so not a very good pic.We got big ones up here in the moro bay area.landed a few more big ones the same day out of the same hole, but not that big got to love it.

keep on chuckin'

Steve,

Yes they do get super big up in his neck of the surf. Accoerding to Ken H. and Jay M. they can get up to 4#s. I have never seen one that big, but I have seen lots that were well over three pounds (on an old Berkely spring scale). Those guys grow big up there. The largest one I ever saw was actually the last third of the fish sticking out of the bucket at Moss Landing Beach. He had 5 that size stuffed in the old paint bucket!

Bryan,

Great catch! You gotta be fast and ready to get a good pic. of one of those super tanker preggies.
