Saturday in the Park(ing lot)

Did my homework and all of the signs pointed east towards the Huntington Flats. Launched the skiff at 6:30 am sharp from Sunset Aquatic and was on the grounds within 30 minutes. Flat conditions, 64.6 degree clean green water, bait, terns everywhere, and those nice red dots on the sonar. Perfect! The sandies were holding between 15-30’ and the barracuda were flipping around on top. At one point there were barracuda jumping 360 degrees around the boat so I just pushed the anchor over the side.

First cast with the olive/white craft fur clouser on the 300 gr Streamer Express was rewarded with a THUD as a chunky 3 pound plus bass climbed on, making a good accounting of herself before posing for a picture. Nice surprise to start the day.

It wasn’t long before the cuda got into the act with the blue/white Clouser doing the most damage with an even fourteen feeling the lip gaff. Unlike last week, these were straight legal fish with a few reaching true gar status. Letting the fly sink out didn't work as well as last week, instead bombing out long casts followed by fast, erratic retrieve near the surface drew lots of strikes.

Went to a #2 olive/angel hair Mushmouth went things slowed down and it enticed a handful of cuda too. Experimented with some other patterns too, but both species always seem to respond best to the b/w. Anytime I can C & R a few dozen quality fish in a morning's fishing, I'm a happy camper! Nothing like summertime fishing!

Missed you at the zoo

We were out there too yesterday. I figure there had to be a few other fly guys out there, but didn't see anyone else. I was kinda busy most of the time... in a good way. Had my best day on the cuda yet, with about ten on some freshly-tied blue/white half&half's. (Thanks to your past posts, I decided to try them). All good quality fish too, a couple took me into my backing. Also got some nice sandies to boot.

With literally thousands of fish going into the sacks its good to know that there are a few us doing our part to sustain the fishery with a little c & r. I was anchored up on the far east edge of the fleet, doing my best to stay clear of the traffic / drifters.

I'm glad the flies worked for you. There's just something about blue/white that barracuda just love. Those big ones run nice and really dig in don't they?
